SPECIFICATION

Braille Labels for Medical Devices & Accessibility

The Equality Act 2010 and the European Accessibility Act require manufacturers and building operators to make their products and premises accessible to blind and partially sighted users. For medical device OEMs, the EU MDR additionally mandates that device labelling be accessible — in practice this means providing Braille on overlays and identification labels for devices used by or around patients.

Adcal Labels produces embossed Braille labels using a combination of screen-printed base graphics and mechanical embossing to create the raised Braille cells. The cells are formed to the dimensional standard required by UKAAF (UK Association for Accessible Formats) — a dot height of 0.48 mm, dot diameter of 1.44 mm and a standard inter-dot spacing — ensuring readability for experienced Braille readers.

Both Grade 1 (character-by-character, uncontracted Braille, suitable for single words and short phrases such as "PLAY", "STOP" or "DOOR OPEN") and Grade 2 (contracted Braille, for longer phrases and pharmaceutical carton text) are available. Specify at the point of order. If in doubt, we recommend Grade 1 for control panel and device labelling, and Grade 2 for pharmaceutical packaging.

  • Grade 1 (uncontracted) and Grade 2 (contracted) Braille — specify at order stage
  • Polycarbonate and polyester substrates — durable, chemical-resistant
  • Combined Braille and printed text in register on a single label
  • Cell dimensions to UKAAF and BS EN ISO 24503 specification
  • Hi-tack rear adhesive for permanent bonding
  • Custom shapes, sizes and colours — round, rectangular, contour-cut
  • Minimum order 25 labels per design

Pharmaceutical Packaging Braille

EU Directive 2001/83/EC requires Braille on the outer carton of all prescription and OTC medicines sold in Europe. The Braille must carry the approved name of the medicine. Adcal produces Braille carton labels and folding carton Braille inserts for pharmaceutical manufacturers and CMOs. Supply the approved text and we handle the Braille translation and production.

Combined Braille & Print

Many applications require both visible printed text and Braille on the same label — for example, a lift button carrying the printed floor number and the Braille equivalent on the same self-adhesive overlay. We produce combined layouts with print and Braille in precise registration, verified on calibrated Braille measuring gauges before despatch.

Braille Translation & Proofing Included

Supply your text in plain English. We translate to the correct Braille grade, produce a printed proof showing the Braille layout, and provide a physical sample for user testing before running the full order.
